      Resolved

So we commissioned one of our favourite artists, lupinprincess, to redraw our irl engagement photo. we have worked with her before, so we knew it was a good bet to drop $110 usd on her. the paypal fee took $6 of it, so we actually tipped her the extra $6 cause we trusted her. It is gorgeous, the background, the poses, just beautiful.

but, my red panda nose looks not quite right. a little off. so i asked her if she was willing to change it slightly. not the whole picture, not the pose, just my nose. she immediately said no, and blocked me.

all the money we spent.... the good faith we had in her.... and all i see when i look at it is my big nose... I wish she would have taken even a second to look at the drawing with me to find a solution. Maybe it wasn't the nose, maybe the eye and lips just need to be moved forward. But she wouldn't give me any more time to talk about it before she blocked me and ceased all communication.

This is a once in a lifetime commission of our actual engagement and now every time i see that photo she redrew, all i can think of is how rude she was about it.

    so so so sad 😞

(Ignoring the friends and family part here, since it was already brought up)
While I agree that you should have brought it up at the sketch stage, and understand that the artist might not want to change things on the finished piece, I agree with armaina here. It's such a small edit, I don't know why they reacted that way, especially since mistakes can happen between sketch and finished picture, especially with no wips. I didn't find you pushy or lecturing at all by the way, and I am sorry that you got that reaction, op.

There's a lot that can change between sketch and lines. An artist that doesn't give updated WIPs shouldn't be surprised if a client asks for an edit here and there. And, honestly, looking at the sketch and finished versions, the nose IS a lot different in shape. I 100% believe if the artist's ToS states not correcting things past the sketch, they should be held accountable if they deviate from the approved shapes.

Also, I'm not sure what this monthly fee is that the artist complains about?

Just to point out that this artist's ToS is full of red flags.

"[...] all commissions are subject to full artistic freedom." No. No, they aren't. Unless the commissioner tells you that things are up to you, you draw what they tell you to draw. That's the idea of a commission. Otherwise all her commissions are wing-its.

"[...] I am not a fan of backseat artists and nit-pickers. Art is a process." What..? You as the artist have to be open for feeback of your customers. That's how it works..

"Never send payment without my approval, because if you do, I will consider it a tip or donation and may not refund you." Excuse me??

"If you failed to inform me of a mistake or change to your commission before or during the optional sketch approval, it is your fault and I am not responsible for fixing it." The word 'optional' here makes me cringe. Either you make changes in-between possible, or afterwards.

Also, half of the refsheets they offer consist of stolen Google-images and otherwise only just feature two fullbodies; the entire thing costing over 200 bucks..

This artist is a giant red flag.

Unfortunately, I feel the sketch was acceptable, but the finished product wasn't. It could have been the colours of my characters face, or the size of the eye/mouth that made it look so much different to me, but since she wasn't even willing to hear me out, we'll never know.

Also have no idea about that. I am a constant customer of them for over 10 years now, with a business account and never had a monthly fee?

Paypal also states this for my google search:

" No monthly fees, setup fees, or contracts. Just pay a standard transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per US transaction. "

which is what I am used to.

Well, if any consolation, they have now lost your business when they could've sucked it up and took the 5 minutes to fix the nose

I really can't fathom not just fixing it and keeping a paying customer. I can understand them not wanting someone to ask for constant changes but this is in no way that kind of situation?? I end up having to edit fixed commissions all the time because mistakes happen and I can gunk up a part without realizing.

Same. I've had my account less than 5 years, and never had a monthly fee, so I was confused if there was some premium version I hadn't heard of that had fees.

So I think we can chalk that up to the artist trying to guilt the client. And over $6.

I'm kind of bothered that the artist just showed you a rough sketch and then went straight for the final piece. When I show my clients the wip, I show them the sketch, lineart, colors, shadows and background, thus giving them a chance to change something during the process, so when I DO have to fix something, I don't have to change a minor detail on top of the finished piece (perhaps that's why the artist doesn't want to change the nose?). In this case it was the artist's fault, I guess

First of all, there is no such monthly fee through Paypal. I operate a business account and have been using Paypal for well over a decade, there has NEVER been any such fee. That is a really weird thing to lie about unless it's to guilt trip people into sending via friends/family as a "oh Paypal already fees me, so you don't have to send as a goods/services :(". Obviously as others pointed out, you are not responsible for her Paypal fees and she could get reported to Paypal for skimming off the top like that.

Secondly, that is such an extreme response to such a small and minor change and I really don't like how she treated you when it's your character being drawn.

As an aside I, personally, don't really catch what the issue is with the nose because red pandas do have sort of "thick" muzzles and large noses proportionate to their size, and that absolutely could be a stylistic thing and how she approaches red panda faces. The only real difference I see between the sketch (that you were happy with) vs the finished product is that the sketch had a big circular nose while the finished product has a smaller heart-shaped nose.

Her behavior was absolutely awful though, she should never have reacted that way and if it was such an issue, an edit with a fee would have been a good middle ground for both of you.
