    On Oct. 5, I saw the artist's post on twitter advertising that their commissions were open:

    I reached out to them over Twitter DMs to inquire and to work out the whole commission. You can see that I asked for the sketch with rough colour.

    Cross referencing with their website, it states that it would look in quality and size as this. Therefore I was expecting a full body piece.

    The artist sent the invoice that I paid for promptly.

    You can see in the twitter DMs above but I will reattach again to explain: I reached out a few months later to ask about the status of the commission. I had understood that it would take a while to complete and was in no rush but wanted some form of an update. I stated as well that I did not mind if it took longer to do, I simply wanted information on the commission and its status to know if the artist still intended on working on it at all.

    The artist finally sent an update. Here, the image sent is a knee-up. At this point, I understand that it should have been on me to confirm if it would have been full body but I (foolishly) assumed that it would be just like the examples on their website. A day after this update was sent, I received the image through email.

    While I did receive the image in the end, the quality of the piece was much worse than the ones advertised and was not a full body.

    This is what I received:

    This is a better view of the images that were advertised on the artist's website under "SKETCH", also at $35 with +$5 for the rough colour. There is clearly a huge style, cleanliness, and detail discrepancy between the commission I received and the ones advertised.

    Overall, I was incredibly disappointed with the end result and how both the quality and the type of commission did not match what was advertised and what I had paid for. I understood that the artist may have had to take longer on the piece (stated on their rules/ToS) but I wanted to reach out to get an update. I felt that I had waited a decent amount of time to warrant the messages (artist also states on their website that status updates are allowed to be asked for, just not daily) and I had complied and did not ask daily. I waited 2 months before contacting after the initial payment and then another week before sending the next message.

    Oh gosh.  Almost all of their examples are full body with feet, so I definitely feel the image isn't like what was shown.

    I also spy them adding on the Paypal fee, yikes.

    Edit:  We downgraded this as you ultimately didn't bring up the issues with the artist, but the lack of full body is definitely a deviation from what they tend to produce.

    Wow, if PayPal catches them adding that "tax," they won't have an account for much longer.  Operating fees should already be part of your overhead, full stop.  PayPal fees are operating fees.

    What I noticed is, did you ever send a reference of your character that was full body? The reference you sent them ends at their knees, and maybe they didn't go below that because they didn't have a proper idea of what their feet looked like?

    As the artist I probably would've asked what they looked like, but it's the reason I'm assuming they didn't include below the knees.

    While I feel the lack of feet should have been brought up to the artist during the WIP, I do agree that the finished piece clearly lacks quality from the example pieces.

    Seconding the comments on the PayPal fee. Amazed they haven't caught it already.

    Or maybe that was done to fix this problem you posted and it's just not been updated here yet. 

    Could be the OP submitted here then spoke to the artist.

    They submitted here Jan 12 at 2 pm my time, but the upload from the artist was done at 11 pm. OP hasn't logged in to the site since early Monday.

    Replying to all of this to say that the artist and I talked about all of the issues. I raised the concern of the quality of the artwork along with the full body vs knee issue. What happened was that they did not see it as necessary to make the piece more polished because my character "did not have as much detail" as other characters they had drawn for commissions. I get where the knee reference may have implied that the piece should be knee instead of full body, however, when I raised this point, the artist gave me the excuse that their "default" is a knee and that an upgrade to a full body was free. I was not made aware of this and was pretty upset because I had scoured their entire website and saw no mention of this. 

    As of Monday, this was all resolved. The artist finished my piece to the standard of the examples on their website and offered a partial refund. 

    I'm not sure where to put the rest of the conversation for you all to read so I attached it in this comment!

    With the image fixed, I'm not sure that the partial refund was necessary, but this is certainly an artist that wants to fix issues in a timely manner. Highly approve.

    I agree, I don't think the refund was necessary (as shown by how I didn't ask for one in the first place and just wanted the image fixed) but I agree that it was much appreciated and I was happy that the artist wanted to fix the whole situation.

    I know this is a couple years old now, but I'm Alex, previously known online as Oscilloceans, the artist in this Beware. I only just now realized this existed after a Google search of my old alias and this being the second result, and I don't refute anything about it, I just feel like I should acknowledge it was A Thing That Happened rather than moving on just because it's marked as resolved. I definitely did not deliver work or service that was to my advertised standards the first time around, and I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to make up for it when you could have just opened a case. I admittedly let myself become very irresponsible with my work ethic and even moreso in my communication with clients, I still kick myself for it and I've done my absolute best to implement more transparency in my process and never let it get that bad again after taking a hiatus.

    The only thing I do want to say is with regards to the fee that I had applied to invoices years ago. At the time I had absolutely no idea that that was infringing, and it was never brought to my attention until I saw a Twitter thread about "surcharges" by chance on my timeline, and immediately rushed to remove it from my invoice templates - actually almost immediately after this, from what I can tell from my invoice archive - and haven't done it since. I wish I could say it was a stupid young person mistake, but I was 19 at that point, I should have researched policies more, and put two and two together to realize I should have just adjusted my base prices to accommodate the transaction fees (which I have done since then).

    All in all a very Dumb moment of mine that I regret wholeheartedly, so much so that I felt the partial refund was absolutely necessary, and I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for being persistent and honest, and for being understanding throughout the rocky process. Every time I see the piece in my files I think about it, and I've been coaching friends of mine who've recently gotten into freelance art about proper invoicing and conduct after being educated more myself.

    TL;DR, sorry if this is weird or unnecessary, just wanted to say that none of your statements fell on deaf ears. ♡
