I might be fucked? Likely being ghosted.
baja replied to tiredofallthis's topic in Advice for Commissioners
There really is nothing to do since you sent the money in an unsecured manner, effectively giving away that money to the artist. You would not be able to dispute it even if you *were* within the Paypal window, since you did not initiate a secure, protected transfer by Paypal's TOS. While this is a more extreme outcome: If you reported something like this, by going around it through your bank/card, it also puts *you* at risk of losing your account, as you admit to misuse of the platform to avoid the service fees. It is something you may want to be mindful of for the future. The only things on our end we can suggest are submitting a full beware for us to review and potentially get the word out there for any other potential clients. But that is fully your prerogative if you wish to be public with it, or take it as a lesson learned. -

We always communicated through the same platform as we did on first contact and used the same paypal address for arranging commissions, too. I wasn't asked to use friends-and-family, that's a mistake 1000% on me: We'd already built-up good rapport from the initial commission and casual communication thereafter, so I became way too trusting. It has since been well-noted to never let my nicer half do that again. -

On the 23rd of November 2023, I first contacted golbinad for a commission. I was informed of their prices, and they offered a slot at an later date. On the 9th of June 2024, I paid them for a single character illustration, with an alt. No updates were shared until the 5th of January 2025, when goblinad showed a rough sketch based on the one I sent previously. I poked him on the 5th of March, when he replied that he'd have something to show the following week. Seeing as there were no updates for several weeks, I lost patience and asked for a refund on the 20th of April. He profusely apologized, said he'd finish in the upcoming week, and offered a free piece as apology. I shot him down, and insisted on a refund, as I was unhappy with how things transpired, and wanted nothing to do with him anymore. He agreed, and said he'd contact me when he'll have the means. As shown above, despite attempts at reaching him, it wasn't until the 7th of August that he replied with a non-answer, reporting the discussion over the refund at a later moment. On the 25th of October 2025, he suddenly mentionned, when it has never been discussed prior to this, that he has a "no refund" policy. Mind you, he has no terms of services anywhere on his Twitter. When he opens commissions, he only requires the interested party to DM him. There is NO form to fill where the ToS might have been shown. On BlueSky, same procedure; just need to send him a DM to claim a slot. Later on, I poked him and it was only on the 18th of May 2026, nearly 2 years after the commission has been paid, that he replied with this gem : So, in summary : the artist has no queue to keep track of his workload, he demands upfront payment without sharing his policy or his ToS to inform his customers, he does NOT give you a timeframe for completion of the commission, he does not respond in a timely manner upon poked and he refuses to refund despite the failure to deliver. The matter has not been resolved as of today, and I doubt I'll ever receive a refund.

Hi! How did you initially commission this artist? Right away my first and immediate concern is if you've actually fallen for a commission scammer. Did they ask you to pay F&F? -

Hello. For the necessary background context, I commissioned this artist back in 2022 and there were absolutely zero issues with them: Communication was fast and quick, frequent updates with a swift delivery, all the good stuff. In August of last year I decided to commission them again for a bigger, more expensive project, with half of the payment done upfront. I still haven't seen anything from it or know what the artist is even doing. I tried sending messages on our platform of initial content around the new year and none have been read even to this day. I then tried adding them on Discord but whilst my friend request has sat unaccepted for months, I have seen them change their profile picture so I know they are at least active there. I also sent two emails and a PayPal message and still no dice. I've been unable to find any other account of theirs online, if any do exist, so messaging elsewhere is likely impossible. This could be an easy PayPal dispute situation if the window hadn't passed and if I didn't, very stupidly, pay with friends-and-family as an option. I was way too trusting based on our previous project and thought it would be a nice gesture. I'm clearly paying for it though, since I'm down $90 and have nothing to show for it. I've got a feeling there is actually zero-hope for this situation but if there's any kind of possible 'out', I would love to hear it. Thank you so much.

Update: After they reached out at the beginning of the month (May 2026), they were able to finish the commission. Unfortunately, I did not grab screenshots of this interaction before they unfriended me on Discord, so I do not have access to those messages at this time. As an unprompted apology, they did also send a second artwork, which only needed a quick correction to remove the ears.

Initiated commission on the 9th July 2022, confirmed Payment of $140 USD the same day. Updated August 27th and was told there was a queue Asked for an update November 03. Was apologised to but then lacked any updates until I prompted in March 03 2023 where I was provided a crude sketch (Clearly done in panic when I asked for updates) July 5th 2023 he starts ignoring me and so I continue to ping him. He's still actively posting til Feb 2025 on this account. So I hunted his Telegram down and started following his tele channel where I confronted him. Recieved a very baseline ink of the supposed "completed work" and then he proceeds to keep ignoring me It was only when I got fed up on his Trello account that he marks my commission as "complete" August 2024 https://trello.com/c/Sq7OFnuG/50-flaydramon I joined his Telegram channel and started responding to all his posts. until he responded to me July 10 2025. Met with hollow words and a broken promise of a refund Up until February 2026 My last attempt and he's still ignoring me Finally he's just decided to ban me from his channel. I assume I'm "Bad for Business" To this date I've still yet to receive either refund nor art. and still not even read my messages.

Advice Needed: Refunded the Money?
HaruTotetsu replied to HaruTotetsu's topic in Advice for Commissioners
Ah good to know. I'll definitely take that into consideration, though its a bit more complicated since they aren't the characters original designer, and the character design in question was created more than 4 years ago. I've also looked into the characters original designer and they have had a DeviantART account for 12 years, and on their ToyHouse account state they are 24 years old. The character in question only has a SFW image and there's nothing inappropriate for kids involved in the sale, just this odd issue with payment. I did some extra digging and found the DA account of the person i bought it from and that is only 5 years old with nothing on it, and the initial transaction was via DA points. So you may be right about them not being of age. There is still a chance this is all a misunderstanding though, like they're old enough but just haven't validated their PayPal for some reason, as I know some object to giving companies certain details in this day and age because of AI data harvesting. I'm thinking I'll wait for their response and ask for them to clarify things, and after that I'll decide what to do. I'd like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Though I worry if I simply return the design this'll just happen to someone else. Thanks for all your helpful advice baja. -
I do not want to assume, but I am going to speculate the design your purchased may have been under $50, around there? You can open a Paypal account at any time, but until you verify it (by linking a bank account/card, verifying your personal info), you are limited in doing a lot with the platform. I recall when I was younger (before the minimum age limit was hard set at 18), I set up an account under a fake name and I could not withdraw more than $25 until I verified my information, like $25 was my hard limit and I could do nothing else with the account. This was about 15+ years back, so things may have changed since then, but it do
