As a quick update, I have now spoken to PayPal in person and they have re-opened the claim. For some reason they changed it from item not received to item not as described. He now has to prove that he's posted it to me.

He's posting about this all over his twitter too. He's got well over 70K followers and even though he's not mentioned me by name I've still deleted both my twitter and my Instagram in case his followers find out who I am as they are saying all kinds of stuff about me and talking about getting revenge on me.

Honestly, this guy's behavior is terrible.

Anyway, thank you for advising me that talking to PayPal was the best way to go.

Good luck! I'm in a similar situation but my bank was willing to open a dispute after I didn't call paypal about my dispute. I understand the stress, and hopefully you get answers sooner rather then later!

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do beyond going public.  (Please bear in mind not to post their name in this thread.)  The moment the claim started going south, the proper thing to do would have been to call Paypal.  They are much more efficient once you are talking to a live human being.  Your only other option is to file a chargeback through your credit card, but that's not possible if you didn't pay with a credit card.

Dorky question, but should I use credit instead of debit when comissioning an artist?

  3. Hey all, not sure if this is the right place to post. In short I've written out a story and I want to make it into a webcomic. My initial thought was simply to hit up an artist and pay for the art in itself.

Does anyone have any experience with what rights the artist should get, as well as what kind of payment should be reccomended? (I.e. buying 500 pages at once, vs 5 to 10 a month?)

  4. Timothy-henri is an artist active on Furaffinity and deviantart. They primarily focus on designing outfits, armor, weaponry, and accessories. They also create unique "armored souls"  which are like anthropomorphic and sentient versions of weapons! Super cool! if I have an idea, but cant properly communicate it to ana rtist I usually run right to Timothy to bring my vision to life!

  5. Shimizuryu is an artist active on deviantart and furaffinity. They often operate on artistic freedom, however they also design outfits and do ref sheets! I'm still absolutely smitten with every piece they've created for me, and I reccomend comissioning them!

  6. I just wanted to shout out to xelgot. I originally commissioned him for a reference sheet of a kemonomimi character. His prices are very fair, but he always goes above and beyond. he's willing to keep on making changes, keep adding details until both are satisfied. I've had him design 2 characters from scratch with ref sheets, had him draw humans and furries. Overall he is definitely my favorite artist, and I find myself tipping him happily after almost every commission. He's always so polite and professional, communicating deadlines and progress very steadily. I have NEVER had an issue with Xelgot, and find that I can count on him to create characters I've pictured in my mind from scratch which always enchants me.

Adding on to this since I re-read it and noticed this at the bottom --

This alone has changed my mind from a caution to full on beware. This is super unprofessional, since as far as what's posted here, all you did was ask for edits. Seeing an artist tweet about being rude to their customers is a HUGE NOPE

Can I do a beware with no payment?

  8. Hi, so recently I had comissioned an artist to make changes to a previous work. We'd agreed upon 20$. They started work and got about half done and complained it was worth more then 20$ work. (It had been approximately 50 minutes of work.)  The price raised to about 40. I said ok, but stated it was unprofessional. About 20 minutes later the job was 90 percent done. They refused to finish, ranted about me mistreating them as an artist (they now were texting me only in spanish and I had to google translate)

They gave me the finished work and said they won't do any more work and not to contact them again.. and no need to pay since it won't be finished. Went on a rant about me mistreating them. (in essence, they prefer total artistic freedom. I'm paying for specific changes, they claim I'm just being difficult.)

I asked them to finish so I could pay them. They then tell me I should pay them for their time.. after they gave me their progress and refused to finish. I asked them to crop out the unedited parts, and I'd pay them 25, a compromise between 20 and 40. They declined.  I offered to pay 60 to 100 dollars for them to finish (90 percent of the work was done. this is 3x to 5x what I was originally told I'd be paying.) They declined. Told them I was uncomfortable paying them after they went off on me in spanish, and already gave me the file, permission to use it. Because I have to pay another artist to either finish editing it, or crop the finished parts. (I have no software for arting.)

Any advice? Like, I offered more money, offered to have them literally crop it in the software they have for the payment, offered an apology.. and they just won't budge.. (but also state it's disrespectful of me not to pay for their time..)  They also made a tweet about how "if a customer is rude to me I AM allowed to be rude back."  I was in no way rude, we were discussing changes as they were being made and the artist became frustrated. I'm extremely upset and confused.  Should I just have another trusted artist finish the edits? Crop what can be used and get a new reference sheet?
