    This post has been resolved~

    WHO: Smileeeeeee

    WHERE: FurAffinity

WHAT: Digital Artwork - YCH (NSFW)

    WHEN: 12/19/2018 - Present

EXPLAIN: So, I commissioned a NSFW YCH piece from this artist in mid December. The turn around time was great, don't get me wrong. However, upon receiving the piece, there were a number of issues that needed correction with markings. Additionally, she had saved my reference on top of the YCH image in the corner so I couldn't use it (see image for better explanation). This is a YCH on a premade base, so I assume corrections can be fairly easy regarding layering. The issues were incorrect colored paw pads, incorrect markings of her groin, and my reference having been saved over the image itself.

There is a language barrier between us, so I wrote back and explained what needed to be corrected/removed and thanked her for the piece overall. I didn't intend it to be rude. She responded stating that she'll fix it when possible. But she proceeded to say that my reference was "very poor quality" and stated that portions were not there at all when they were as well as tell me that colors were on it that were not. I even went back and checked the color dropper of my own character to ensure this was correct. The only thing I can imagine that caused these issues is her using my reference to color drop at a very low scale that caused it to be pixelated. My reference itself is a very large scale, so why she shrank it so much is beyond me. She also did not use the Color Swatch on the side. I have never had an artist say my reference was poor. I've never had issues like this prior. I showed my reference to other artists and asked some I have used in the past and they stated they loved the quality and it was easy to use.

Summary: While the turn around time was awesome, the image had a lot of issues and seemed to be minor mistakes from lack of observation or care. When asked to make corrections, it was suddenly turned on me and unnecessarily rude towards my artwork/character. I do not feel welcome to commission her again and I don't feel confident that I'll get what I actually paid for. Communication could have been a lot more professional.

This is honestly very strange, as it clearly shows your character's colors.  Also, I have no idea why someone would turn over an image with the character ref still on it!

I'll admit to sometimes color picking from a ref instead of the swatch, but usually I confirm the color with the swatch before using it. Sometimes colors aren't clearly labeled and just different enough and I always ask. Maybe the artist didn't know how to and decided to guess?

As for the ref being saved in the image. That just seems like a sloppy oversight. Although, it's not the only one done that way. Hm.

Not to mention that the reference doesn't have pink on it anywhere? I don't see how they thought that was correct.

That's quite a strange case. Would've been easier if the artist just asked questions if they weren't sure. I also find it questionable that the ref sheet was visible on the finished commission/ych file o.o

What an absolutely bizarre situation. First, your character is very cute and the ref sheet is easily readable so it's very strange she'd claim it's "poor" (and also very rude and inappropriate to say to someone), secondly what a strange mistake to make saving the ref sheet on the finished product??

Her behavior around your reference is so so uncalled for though.

I'm honestly incredibly confused about what would make an artist send out an image with the commissioner's reference still on it. That makes no sense at all to me. Your reference sheet seems to be a pretty decent size and quite clear which leads me to wonder where they could have possibly gotten a small and low quality version from. Was this the very same link you gave them?

    Thank you, Bourbon!! ❤️

I've been thinking about it all day and how the image could've been obscured or messed with. She removed the original image/topic that I had replied with my information for the YCH, but I know I linked my NSFW Reference (which can be seen in the Imgur Images) and my NSFW Reference is ONLY available via link through Imgur and is the exact same size/resolution as the SFW one I linked here. Like I said, I even opened up the image and checked the colors to try and figure out what happened.

For the record, I often copy paste the ref I'm working with onto it's own layer in the image I'm working on, and shrink it down to put in the corner. Then I just delete the layer before sending anything out. It's just easier than flipping between tabs in CSP, or having them side by side in different windows.

Guessing this artist did the same, and just didn't delete the layer (very weird, not sure how you wouldn't notice it before you sent the client their file). I also grab my colours first lol, to prevent grabbing the wrong one from a pixelated file.

The comment about your ref is pretty ridiculous; you can very clearly see that the pawpads are white in the ref you provided, not pink. And the swatches are another context clue, if the artist couldn't figure it out. If they were still confused, they could have sent a quick message asking.

Very unprofessional; all they had to do was go,"Oh sorry, I'll fix that as soon as I get a chance!"

If I'm understanding this correctly, she scaled the ref sheet down enough for it to pixelate and cause color issues. And I just don't understand why. If you're working on a canvas that small, surely you can keep the ref sheet open in another window that you can then pick from without it becoming overly complicated? Or even have a specific palette saved for the project that you update for each commission that you work on. There are so many ways to avoid this, and none of them involve laying the blame for your own error at the feet of the commissioner.

I assume the pink they are talking about is the pink that is around the character itself, to make it pop from the background.
Usually, if I have no idea what the flesh colour is, I go based off the nose/inner ears.

I just wanted to post an update:

It has been one week since I asked for corrections to be made. No communication or updates thus far. To be honest, I was able to fix the image myself through editing. I won't be pursuing this situation further simply because it's a waste of my time, but if I do receive the corrected file, I'll be sure to post here.

    Hello, I'm that artist x3

Yes, it's my very great mistake! During our communication I had some difficulties in real life and I forgot to correct the artwork. Poor quality - I don’t know why, but my ipad, on which this order was placed, didn’t want to open a large reference format and I thought that it was his full size.
The customer just had to write me again and I would fix it, it’s just a misunderstanding.
    Sorry for it.

All two works were corrected and sent to customers. I was really in a hurry to meet the deadline and did not notice these mistakes.
This is my first negative review and I want to improve. Usually I am always glad to communicate with the customer and always correct any feasible requests, especially my mistakes.

    Thanks for replying, Smu.

    I also wanted to clarify a few things;
Yes, I did receive my corrected art piece today shortly after I was messaged regarding my Beware post itself via FurAffinity.

The issue here for me as a customer was not that you forgot to correct it, it was how I was treated to begin with. Regardless of the technical error, I felt that the blame for the mistakes were on me for my "poor quality" reference when all could have been avoided if you had asked me for another file or image since that one wasn't easy to use. The response I was given was very harsh and made me want to avoid further communication. I was not given a time frame for the correction and I was honestly nervous to bother you again. I cut my losses and moved on.

I also wanted to state that I did reply to you and I was the one to reach out about the mistakes. The last reply I had received from you is above about how you'd fix the image when you could get to it. I responded and thanked you, stated I've never had that issue before, and left it open to discussion, but you never continued. HvYS3Ob.png

That said, I understand life gets in the way; I do appreciate you contacting me, apologizing, and fixing my art piece.
